Serpents & Spirituality Entwine

Today is Nag Panchami an auspicious day for India, the Naga tribe and snake lovers. When I think of snakes they bring me to tears, not because of fear and loathing, but because of the depth of feeling, respect and reverence that arises. My first transcendental experience happened at an early age when I looked into the eyes of my pet python; dark, alert and mysterious they were cosmic black holes that sucked me in.  I’ve always been magnetically drawn to snakes in an unexplainable way. When I was about 6 years old and traveling by bus with my family on a dusty back road on the outskirts of Bangalore, I saw a gigantic snake out the window…overwhelmed with excitement I screamed ‘STOP!’ The bus halted and I ran out and proceeded to touch the snake, much to the despair of my concerned mother. Luckily the snake did not harm me. So why do people react so strongly to snakes, either with fear or mesmerization? Here are some interesting shares:

S ~ Snakes Are Spiritual Teachers

Snakes whisper “embrace what revolts you and you will be set free”. They are tantric teachers that help us understand paradoxes and overcome fear of death and fear of change. Shedding their skin they encourage us to let go of the old and let in the new. We receive upgrades in consciousness and healing by simply being in their presence; sensitive individuals can feel this. If you are afraid, know something good is happening, and stress in the form of fear is simply being released. Snakes are firmly established in a permanent meditative state; they are grounded, alert, highly responsive and in synchrony with all the laws of nature.

S ~ Snakes and Spirituality are Entwined

Throughout every culture and every age serpents have been revered and appeared in literature, temples and folk law. Every temple in India has snake carvings or imagery, and some naga temples are solely dedicated to snakes. Higher beings and great sages (seers of the ultimate reality) are believed to choose snake bodies because the physiological structure of a snake can house and reflect the finest levels of reality. Snakes can also attract and house an infinite number of non-physical entities within their physiologies.

S ~ Sadhguru Hosts Epic Naga Events

Today Sadhguru will be hosting a massive Naga festival and event. Traditionally ancient ceremonies will be performed, snakes will be given milk baths, flowers, and other offerings. Friends and I will be meditating, chanting rudram with naga interpolations and taking the snakes I care for to the local park. Whenever I take snakes out in public people love them and it makes their day. Occasionally I meet people with actual phobias however that is rare and can be overcome.

S ~ There are Secret Snake Societies

Many people revere snakes all over the world. In the United States the reptile industry is gigantic and reptile shows sell out in advance. The general public sense their power and some even get addicted to them. Personally I run a snake society in the Hollywood Hills.

S ~ Snakes Can Predict The Weather

Snakes can predict earthquakes, fires, floods and other environmental changes. The snakes I care for in L. A. were in their ponds days before the wildfires erupted in California; yes, they predict things before they happen! Yesterday they were up high on branches because there was flooding outside; they are the ultimate psychics. If I want to know the weather, I go into the snake room.

S ~ Snakes Obliterate Thought

The profound presence of a serpent has the power to obliterate all thought, personality and past. Serpents exude and transmit eternal silence. This is depicted when Lord Shiva (the God of eternal silence) wears Vasuki the cobra around his neck. In a permanent meditative state, serpents possess the power to pull humans into a transcendental space. Their energy field is vast and cosmic with great connection to unseen realms. This explains why my first experience of transcendence was with a snake.

S ~  Getting Bitten is Not The End Of The World

When you die you only drop the body, the eternal consciousness remains. In India a person who dies from a snake bite is believed to gain liberation and is given special funeral rites in the Ganges. Even though dying from a snake bite cannot destroy the soul, it’s best to avoid bites. It’s a shock to the system and no fun for the snake or for the human. Treat snakes with the utmost respect and sensitivity. Snakes act as a mirror to your feelings so if you’re anxious or afraid you could get bitten. They never bite out of aggression, only in defense.

S ~ Snakes Can Communicate with Humans

Snakes vibrate at an extremely high frequency and non-verbal and intuitive communication requires a stretch in human consciousness. By meditating, being open, nonjudgmental and patient, a connection can be established and information shared. We may receive timeless knowledge, thoughts, images, feelings, sensations, dreams or other information. Personally I have had experiences communicating with my snakes and serpent consciousness; I will go into this at another time.

S ~ Snakes Need Conservation

Always remember that snakes are highly valuable to the ecosystem and it’s important to respect them. They keep the rodent population in check and provide a calming, meditative function in collective consciousness.
